Awesome show!!, 18 July 2006
Author: from New Delhi, India
This is one of those rare epics that come only once in a blue moon. This is one of the best 'First Contact' genres ever made. No movie on the big screen so far - no, not Independence Day or even Close Encounters of the Third Kind (amongst my favorite films, I might add) have been able to give you the kind of goose pimples that watching 'V' gave me.
The ensemble cast with Marc Singer, Faye Grant, Jane Badler and others have done a fantastic job and Kenneth Johnson has done a superb job making this show. Not only is the storyline and plot very capturing, the characters in this really come to life and you actually get involved with them unlike many other shows. And this is even more amazing because there are SO MANY characters and each one of them has their own story which is depicted very well. I love the way the characters all start off in different settings and events and don't know each other, but gradually they come together.
The Nazi-esquire theme also works out well. The special effects for 1983 are cool enough to be used today and the lasagnas on 'V' are the absolutely coolest ones ever. Better than Star Trek 'phasers' or Star Wars 'blasters'. Not to mention the Mother Ships and the various classes of shuttles.
This is a good one and this is certainly something I am hoping they give more. Either a movie or a remake. There is supposed to be a 'V-The next generation' in the making. I can hardly wait!

Made-For-TV movies of today are poorly acted, exaggerated and make you happy you have a remote control, so you can quickly change channels to X-Files reruns. However back in the 80's many TV movies were brilliant including this one. "V" takes you on an adventure where some aliens try to become friendly with humans and then rip us off. Except they're not after our silverware or jewelry they want the real important stuff like water, and I'm not talking about a couple gallons of Evian. I am talking about the entire world supply. Take time to enjoy a mini-series that will stand for all time. Great performances by all players. Kudos to Marc Singer.

Classic Science Fiction Television, 21 August 2004

Considered by many to be one of the best in the genre, V is a television classic.
Airing during 'May Sweeps' on NBC over two nights, the mini-series was a surprise ratings smash. Critically praised for it's introspective tale with strong themes, the special effects were top-notch, particularly for television of the time.
NBC had taken a gamble with this cutting-edge, creative, and creepy alien-invasion story that pays off in some memorable performances from members of the large cast.
Twenty-plus years later, Kenneth Johnson's epic V holds up extremely well, it's message of resistance and sacrifice being ever more relevant in this Post- 9/11 world.

It doesn't get any better than this., 13 January 2000

The best thing EVER to be put on television, without a doubt. V is just the most amazing mini-series ever! Both parts are incredible, with fab acting, cool special effects and one of the greatest stories ever put to the screen. If anything, watch V for the brilliant performances from Jane Badler, Marc Singer, Faye Grant, Blair Tefkin, Diane Civita, David Packer, Viveka Davis, in fact, the whole cast are totally amazing. There's really nothing else left to say. The best TV event of the '80's, hang on, no, the best TV event of ALL TIME! To everyone out there, watch it and love it!

More than a SciFi, 19 May 2003
Author: from Ridgewood, New York
I was reading a comment about this movie made by Lone Solo who states that "V" is a metaphoric SciFi film about nazi and Holocaust. While I agree with him I say that "V" is more than an allegory about this two topics. It is a SciFi miniseries that contains many social comments.
First, of course, Holocaust and nazi.
Second, it shows TV as a powerful tool to reach every single soul on our planet. It also shows how TV can manipulate and brainwash people. Notice that the arrival of the aliens as every single move they do on our planet is covered on TV.
Third, it shows that people can sell their souls even to the devil when they are compensated with expensive gifts. In other words, how materialistic people are.
Fourth, how rich and fortunate we are in having a planet with valuable natural sources as water. At one point, friendly alien tells earthling rebel Donovan "Your planet is rich. I envy you."
Without any doubt, "V" is a powerful SciFi movie that not only entertains (it does it a lot) but also makes us think about our conditions as human beings.
As an interesting note, we can enjoy of a pre-Freddy Krueger Robert Englund as a dumb but nice alien.

V for Victory!, 14 May 2005

Now this is real sci-fi! Kenneth Johnsons story is (in my opinion) one of the best ever written. While I rank The Tripods as my favourite sci-fi adventure, this will come as a good second.
I wasn't very old when I saw V for the first time, but I can honestly say it blew me away! And even now almost 20 years later I can still watch it and be in awe like I was way back then.
And now I am just waiting for the return of V, which finally seems to be becoming reality. Hopefully it will stick to the basics and not go "overboard" like so many re-makes have done over the years. But with Kenny at the helm I doubt that will be a problem, since I happen to know that the legacy of V means a lot to him.
Very Good Miniseries, 16 October 2003

I was 13 years old when V first came out, and thought it was fantastic. Recently, I've seen it again, and while I realize that there was some cheesy 80s dialogue and hair, and that the special effects are not so great compared to CGI stuff, the story is still decent.
The story features, of course, 50 UFOs from Sirius that come to Earth, supposedly on a peaceful mission, but the aliens, called the "Visitors", really have sinister motives in mind. A human resistance movement develops and begins to battle the Visitors.
What I liked about the show was how it featured everyday people, and what they'd do. Some humans fought, while others became collaborators and were rewarded by the Visitors. On the other side of the coin, some of the Visitors side with the humans. This showed that the aliens, as individuals, still had some sort of basic moral code.
I thought that aspect made it very interesting: it wasn't simply two armies fighting it out, but rather a group or ordinary people trying to wage a guerilla style war against a large invasion force. The resistance leaders are people not used to leading: a med student, a TV camera man, an anthropologist, a small time crook, a cop, etc.
Look beyond the special effects (which really aren't that bad, all things considered), the silly hair styles (Marc Singer still has his even today), and try to follow the story. It's not the greatest television ever produced, but it's very good. 4 out of 5 stars.

On 30 October 1982, Dominique Dunne, who had been signed to play the role of Robin Maxwell, was at her house with co-star David Packer going over lines for the next day's filming, when her boyfriend John Sweeny arrived unexpectedly and throttled Dunne into a coma. Five Days later, on 4 November 1982, Dunne died. Blair Tefkin was cast to replace Dunne as Robin and all of the scenes that had been shot with the late actress were re-filmed. According to the DVD commentary, however, Dunne is still visible from the back in one group scene that occurs as the Visitors arrive on earth.
The mother ships are matte paintings. There wasn't a large-enough budget to build miniatures for them.
The series was intended as a literal telling of the Nazi takeover of German and the resistance movement against it. However, due to the popularity of Star Wars (1977), as well as the belief among network execs that the US citizens would not believe a fascist takeover, the network execs had the producers change it to a science fiction mini-series. Other ideas such as communism, etc were also discussed, but discarded.
In a massive media campaign before the series aired, posters with the line "The Visitors Are Our Friends" appeared in subways around the United States--just as they did in the first part of the mini-series. Days before the first episode aired, each poster was spray-painted with a bright red "V" exactly as was done in the show.
Was NBC's highest-rated program in two years. It had a 40 share and 80 million viewers for each episode.
The laser effects cost US$1,000 each. The high cost was due to the lengthy post-production work by manually adding optical effects to the film.
The character Diana was ranked #5 in TV Guide's list of the 25 Greatest Sci-Fi Legends (1 August 2004 issue).
The music that plays when the ship is first seen has as a major motif consisting of three short notes followed by one long note. This is the letter V in Morse code. It is also patterned after Ludwig van Beethoven's fifth symphony
Due to the high cost of the laser special effects, it was decided that human resistance fighters would use regular rifles and pistols. This was explained away in the script as due to high security on the alien armories.
It was hinted in the pilot that the Visitors were engaged in a war with another alien species. However, this idea was never explored by the scriptwriters.
The octagonal storage containers a device with what appear to be rotating red lasers inside a long glass tube, both of which are seen on the Visitors' mother ship, later made regular appearances as set dressing and props on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987) and other series.
The company the resistance members steal medical equipment from is called Stamos Pharmaceuticals. Producer/director Kenneth Johnson named it after actor John Stamos, who his daughter had a crush on at the time.
Much of the non-original music for the filming of V was a combination of motifs from Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries and, more notably, motifs from the 4th Movement of Beethoven't 5th Symphony.
The music during the closing credits was a combination of most, if not all, motifs of the 4th Movement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony closing with the final couple of measures of the 4th Movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony. According to Kenneth Johnson's DVD commentary, the lyrics to Beethoven's music were added with some self-admitted "outrageous chutzpah" and were the following translated into Latin: Glory to the Cause, Glory to the Fallen, Glory to the Fighters for Freedom, Victoria...Victoria, for Victory!
