Trustee was Shute's last work and was left as an estate and published posthumously in '60. What he could
have achieved if he had of lived a few more years. I'm now older that he was when he died and I can verify with some
certainty, that sixty is way to young.
In Trustee the author revisits the familiar terrain of a simple man
overcoming difficulties and complications, not for glory but to discharge a duty self-imposed by his own morality. An
adopted and orphaned daughter's legacy is buried on a tropical island twelve thousand miles away..."And he was the
trustee".
Along with 'Most Secret' this is my favourite of Shute's works, which pretty much puts it up in the
top ten of all that I've read, and I can happily listen to it once a month. Which tells you more about me than
you need to know.
It is fiction after all, but it would be pleasant to think that being a good craftsman and a good
person would be more than just its own reward, as it was for Keith Stewart.
