Una squadra scientifica si è dispersa su un pianeta artificiale. L'Enterprise deve scoprire cosa sia accaduto e lo fa scendendo nello zoo dove sono rinchiusi altri membri della federazione. Gli esseri che lo popolano sono dotati di intelligenza superiore e osservano le loro menti. La libertà arriverà solo con la comunicazione. L'episodio riprende i temi già trattati nell'episodio pilota della serie originaria: Lo zoo di Talos.
